John Bernardi and Daniel Alexander from the United Way spoke about the 33 agencies which are supported by their organization. Their administrative fee (7.6%) is below national average. It is a great way to contribute to many worthwhile agencies in our community. The Shipman Youth Center is one of many. Designated giving goes 100% to the specified agency.

There is a new help agency comming, you dial 211 and you will be able to recieve "who to call for what" information. This service will be available early in 2009. Dan Alexander volinteered to talk to other organizations or businesses , just call 873-6368.

Steve, Bill, Ed Roetman & Bob attended the GSE/PHF Dinner in Saranac Lake last Sat. It was impressive in that the French GSE Leader was born in Saranac Lake and 3 Rotarians..Esther Arlan, Bill Plumb & Chandler Ralph were named Paul Harris Fellows.

Jim McKinna spoke about the Destination Marketing studies recently completed. The Goal is to assist communities in how they attrach visitors. The main draw is the Adirondacks. Zay Curtis summed it up whan he thanked Jim for all he has done in Marketing Lake Placid and the Adirondacks.

Tina Leonard held a Service Committee Meeting after. Activity in Literacy, Vocational and Community Parks were discussed. Additionally discussions concerned donations to Life Flight and the Food Pantry.

Sept 25

Pres. Steve announced our attendance in July was 82% and 75% in August, which puts us in top 10% in the district. He & two others attended the Solar oven demonstration at the Community Church on 9/24. The Presenter was a Rotarian from Rochester whose club is donating 500 ovens and who stressed the need for a local Rotary contact in Kenya for our oven project..

Andera Burnham from the NYS Attorney general’s office spoke about internet security. Especially as it relates to youngsters. Some tips for parents & Grandparents are :

1.    Don’t allow unsupervised internet access.

2.   Put the computer in a well traveled place.

3.   Teach children not to provide personal information.

4.   Look into internet security programs.

5.   Look up info on  netsmart.org

Our NH Rotarian visitor told us about his breakfast club, a little smaller but just as friendly !!.

Guess who won the right to try for the 50/50 ??      He picked the 4 of clubs, too bad.

Sept 11

We had a moment of silence in Memory of 9-11-2001. President Steve reminded us of up coming events: Membership Seminar in Clayton  9/13, GSE/PHF Dinner in Saranac Lake 9/27, District conference in Cornwall 10/16-18. Bill Stowe announced the Happy Hr on 9/26 will be held at the Moose Lodge at the Whiteface Club. A good time to bring a guest for fun & fellowship.

Michelle Byno talked about the transition of ownership to AMC. A local Couple, Diane & Favor smith had donated a “Scooter wheelchair” to the rest home. Diane had called Rotary for a recommendation and Gene Davis & Gene Gengel assisted in the delivery. A nice Rotary contribution to our community.

Steve & Michelle explained Rotary’s part in the Chair donation

Some of our members tried it out

VP Ed Finnerty ran the meeting as Pres Steve is off camping in Washington (state).

  Our  Club Assembly- Each Committee chair discussed their plans for the year. Highlights are;

Gene Gengal & Duncan Winter will organize financial support for Jambo Jipa School in Kenya. Hopefully to include other Rotary clubs and obtain a foundation grant.

Gene's membership thrust will be on Rotary Education. He reminded all that they were a major part of membership recruiting and retention.

Ed Finnerty is our P R person . Communications to all are key..Club with monthly bulletin, use of our "improved web site, News paper articles, an improved club brochure and hi quality hand out for visitors.

John Davies looking for a back up for Camilla, continued program organization (will take suggestions from members, a monthy Greeter assignment for members, Christmas party to get organized in October.

Ed said that the community Service committee would be meeting. We will continue with Bell ringing, highway pick (organized by John Davies), looking at renovating a 3rd park, Kate Smith Award, Service above self award, Yuri's UN Day activity.

Bill Stowe is organizing our Polio Plus Campaign. We need to raise $ 3,000 over the next 3 years 9our share of meeting the Bill & Melinda Gates Challenge). Bill has located an Iron lung and will organize a fundraiser involving the Ironman. He'd welcome any other ideas.

Bob Hanna, our foundation chair congratulated the club on it's support of the Foundation. With 14 active Paul Harris Fellows, 16 Foundation Sustaining members and almost $ 100/member contributed last year. We'll hope to get to $ 100/member this year, have additional Foundation Educational presentations and maybe elevate the PHF status.
