Our Group leader is happy

On Feb 10, 2005 we dedicated our phase one work. Come spring we will install playground equipment in both parks.

The Power St Park is located on the north side of Mill pond in the village of Lake Placid. The park has been neglected for some years. It could be a lovely place to picnic, fish or just relax and commune with nature, except was  neglected and showed it..

We have cleaned up the park. planted new trees, added gardens & cooking grills, and fixed the fences. Additional picnic tables and  a secured playground area with suitable equipment will be added later this summer .. Part of the project was to survey the users of the park to determine their specific desires. We held a very successful fund raiser dinner & a "Dam Duck" race  at Lisa G's Restaurant  on July 15 (numbered ducks went over the mill pond dam). as part of our fund raising/publicity programs. Club members have performed the manual work of tree pruning , gardening, fence repair/replacement, and grill installation.

A second park, located adjacent to the train station (on the south side of Mill pond) is an excellent  place for train passengers to rest while waiting for the train to return. Neighbors will  enjoy picnics in the park ,as well.

Both parks have benefited by the addition of a total of 21 trees. Existing trees have been pruned &  picnic tables , grills and  flower gardens have been added.

The Completed Picnic area, in Jewtraw Park, ready for cooking. Power St Park has one, too.

Because of our interest and community survey the village has agreed to post park hours and install dog pooper scooper stations in all seven community parks.

Imagine having a family cook out in the Mill Pond Parks, with a newly installed grill for your use, nice picnic tables and super views.Just before Labor Day  a small sand box was added. There is some interest in building a covered pavilion for the sand box. It turns out that sand is very popular with small children.

The most recent addition  10/6/05

This Playground climbing/slide piece was relocated from one of the village parks. It is the beginning of rounding out the playground in Power St park.

Flowers were planted at the entrance to Power St Park. In the spring we'll all enjoy the color provided by the 100 bulbs that Camilla Palumbo planted (picture to follow in May 2005) in both parks.

In the summer/fall  of 2006    we will have the climbing wall and the toddler swing installed in Mill Pond Park. (we delayed installation til after the Mill Pond Road construction is completed.

The Train was installed in the Jewtraw Park, which is just down the road from the Lake Placid Train Station.

OnSeptember 21, 2006 a Climbing wall & swing set were installed in Power St Park. Some finishing to do. The Work crew consisted of President Yuri, Steve Detwiler, Carol Treadwell-Stietz, John Huttlinger, Jamie Rogers, Joe McAvoy & Bob Hanna

Past Projects

  Thomas Shipman Youth Center

The Thomas Shipman Youth Center was a major project for the club in the 1997-99 time period. We raised over $ 20,000 mostly with the “Great golf ball jump”. Numbered golf balls were rolled down the outrun at the 90 meter jump., with the ball that went the furthest being the winner. Members of the club contributed significantly to the construction. All the interior partitions were constructed by Rotary members. Additionally much of the insulation, siding and sheet rocking was credited to Rotary. Well over 3,000 hours of volunteer effort from our club in the construction of the Thomas Shipman Youth Center.

Several of our members remain active on the Youth Center Board and with activities at the center.

 Van for Nursing home

In 2001 we learned that the Uihlein Mercy Center was in need of a handicap van. We held several Casino Night fundraiser and obtained some business grants, raising over $ 5,000. A fellow Rotarian from Goshen, NY learned of our quest and sold us a used van well below market value. We had the van painted by Bosies in Malone

Life Flight Defibrillator

In 2002 we donated a $ 17,000 defribulator to Adirondack Life Flight. This enables this emergency medical service to be capable of caring for critical Heart attack patients while in flight
